IN 2011 fresh out of Hot Docs Festival, the IFC (International Film Center) debuts Fightville. Fightville was the second serious documentary about MMA, and the first to secure a small distribution deal. The year was 2011, and with the success of the Ultimate Fighter MMA was becoming a popular sport, or at least somewhat mainstream. The documentary was an introduction to the sport of MMA, and it focused on a small gym in Louisiana called the Louisiana Gladiator Academy, home to Time Credeur and Dustin Poirier. Justin had turned pro in 2010 and had been fighting in the WEC promotion. After their merger with UFC he began a long and impressive career in the big show. Dustin was one of the best in his generation. He beat some of the most spectacular athletes of the modern era, even giving Conner McGregor his second loss. Dustin was and still is a remarkable athlete, but what makes him special is he was a true working class hero and a family man in a time of trash talk, heels, and hyper nationalism. Dustins career also shined outside of the cage with his deep commitments to charity and humble demeanor, he stood out from the rest of his generation. His exit from the sport following his most recent fight with Max Holloway leaves a void. Prize fighting needs characters, athletes with charisma, a story, mythic figures and the current landscape is barren. While the UFC is capable of producing and finding stars, Dustin was unique. Dustin is the type of athlete that all sports need, he was a true champion to the people of New Orleans and we will all miss him.
